For this first time since its inception, the Mayor’s Youth at Work Partnership (MYAWP) is offering internships to local students during the school year. Last Saturday, January 11, 2020, marked Day One for a new cohort of MYAWP interns. 32 students from Duval County attended the Opening Ceremony at the Kids Hope Alliance, pledging to “make a lasting impression” on their jobs and communities.
Over the next nine months, the students will work at agencies within the City of Jacksonville, including:
- City Council
- Employee Services
- Parks and Recreation
- Human Rights Commission
- Jacksonville Fire and Rescue
- Jacksonville Public Library
- The Mayor’s Office
- Military and Veterans Affairs
- Neighborhoods
The Mayor’s Youth at Work Partnership was established to develop a talent pipeline for local businesses and employers by connecting students to career pathways and training opportunities. Participants must be between the ages of 16-21, have at least one letter of recommendation, and high school students must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
John Everett, the Director of Pre-Teen and Teen for the Kids Hope Alliance, said the changes were made in an effort to expand the scope of the MYAWP intern experience. “We are excited for the opportunity to launch a year round cohort of internships, “he said, continuing, “We understand that following a career pathway is not easy and we hope that this opportunity continues to motivate students to pursue their desired educational and occupational goals.”
